The Virginia Informer Wins Paper of the Year
The Virginia Informer, the Collegiate Network member paper at the College of William and Mary, won the Paper of the Year Award at the 2008 Collegiate Network Editors Conference. The Informer, a well designed paper that is easily recognized across campus, was praised for their professional writing, editing, and layout. While the opinion page is conservative, the rest of the paper is strictly focused on campus news. The award also recognized the paper's role in the Wren Cross controversy at William and Mary.The Informer investigated the removal of the cross from the Wren Chapel by President Gene Nichol. The paper continued to follow the administration until early 2008 when the Board of Visitors refused to renew Nichol's contract. The Informer, through its solid reporting and bringing national attention to the issue, played a significant role in Nichol’s resignation.
