Each year the Collegiate Network offers paid summer internships and postgraduate, year-long fellowships at prominent media outlets to its most promising student journalists. For students seriously considering a journalism career, these positions offer writing opportunities at some of the nation's leading publications. Former interns and fellows include: Jonathan Karl, national security correspondent, ABC News; Naomi Scaefer Riley, deputy taste editor, Wall Street Journal; and Matthew Continetti, associate editor, The Weekly Standard. The Collegiate Network will sponsor at least 11 summer internships and at least 8 year-long fellowships in 2009-10.

DEADLINE: DECEMBER 1, 2008. SEE APPLICATION DETAILS BELOW

Year-long Fellowships

The CN pays year-long fellows stipends of $24,000 to $30,000, depending on location at a variety of prominent media venues, ranging from USA Today and Roll Call to the Weekly Standard and Radio Free Europe.

Summer Internships

The CN pays summer interns stipends of approximately $4,000 (depending on location) at venues throughout the country.

Training and Support

The CN offers all interns and fellows career development assistance both informally and formally through various events and programs, including:

  • Intern/Fellow Training Workshop: In the Spring, the incoming class of interns and fellows attends this weekend-long seminar featuring briefings with professional journalists, including former CN fellows, who offer advice on advancing in a journalism career. Topics include: pitching stories, fact-checking, cultivating sources, multimedia tips, journalistic ethics, and newsroom etiquette.
  • Annual Intern/Fellow Luncheon: Each July, the CN invites its interns, fellows, and their supervising editors to a luncheon in Washington, D.C. This is an opportunity for interns and fellows to make contacts at publications around the country. Past luncheons have featured brief remarks from prominent journalists, including fellowships hosts Mort Kondracke of Roll Call and Fred Barnes of The Weekly Standard.
  • Journalists Salons: Each quarter, the CN hosts a small, private gathering for its Year-long Fellows and alumni and friends in the media, either in Washington or New York City. These are informal, invitation-only opportunities to enjoy good conversation and develop friendships with writers and editors at a variety of media venues.
  • Alumni & Friends Reception: In June, the CN hosts its annual public reception in Washington, D.C., for all current students, alumni, and friends of the Network, regardless of their professions.
