CN's 2010-2011 Publication Awards

The Cornell Review Accepts Award

Congratulations to the winner's of the CN's 2010–2011 Publication Awards, which were presented this month at the annual Editors Conference. The winners are as follows:

Publication of the Year—The Cornell Review

In its nearly thirty years of publication, The Cornell Review has consistently maintained both a high level of reporting and a dedication to diversifying the discourse on Cornell's campus. Rather than resting on their laurels, however, this past year saw an increased dedication to improving the publication and expanding its impact on campus. They decided to revamp their staffing structure to ease transition periods and aggressively recruit new writers. They also developed a regularly updated blog, in addition to their main website, which provides access to shorter more immediate updates, stories, and musings. They have skillfully utilized all three sources to capture an increased audience while cross-promoting for different sources (i.e. printing excerpts from the blog in the printed newspaper). Additionally, they updated the layout of the newspaper to provide a more professional and inviting appearance and have continued to cover stories of significance and interest to students at Cornell University.

Best New Media Award—GW Patriot

Since its inception, the GW Patriot has been a pioneering force in the world of new media. Last year, the Patriot nearly tripled its website traffic; they averaged 10,000 visits per month (3,750 unique) and 27,000 page views per month. They also managed to garner 600 fans on Facebook and 1,700 Twitter followers. Their coverage of the Student Association elections has been heralded as the most thorough, particularly because of their liveblogging feature, CoverItLive, which allows Patriot staff to post live updates about campus events – and election results, in particular, to their website.

Best Newspaper Layout—Vanderbilt Torch

Since winning this award last year, the Vanderbilt Torch has continued to serve as an example of innovative and eye-catching layout techniques. From the trademark full color, above the fold image, to their use of typography and author images, to their striking, image-oriented center folds, the Torch has a style all its own.

Best Magazine Layout—Harvard Ichthus

Over the past couple of years, the Harvard Ichthus has dramatically improved its appearance from a once text-heavy journal to an inspiring amalgamation of photos, illustrations, pull quotes and tactful text placement. The result is a more interesting, creative, and attractive layout which invites readers to engage with the content.
